If you are doing Latin studies of any kind, but particularly with Memoria Press’s Latina Christiana series, Ludere Latine will be of interest to you. The familiar games of word searching, crossword puzzles, and hangman are given a Latin twist, helping to make the practice and drill of Latin vocabulary memorization and usage more fun.

Each chapter from Latina Christiana I has a corresponding set of games. The vocabulary words are reviewed with a word search, and then there are derivative and grammatical forms crossword puzzles. All of these games are done individually. Every five lessons there is a page of hangman using the Latin sayings from the lessons. These are done with two students or a student and teacher/parent.

In addition to these, there is a page of group games described on page 79. Unique games entitled “Gladiators” and “Josho” are for two teams, giving the teacher a chance to ask questions, or for students to try to stump each other by choosing a secret word the other team needs to guess. Latin variations are provided for the familiar games Memory, Jeopardy-Bingo, and Pictionary.

Answers are included in the back of the book, as well as a list of Latin words, including the English translation and the derivatives.

Ludere Latine is a readymade way to make Latin memorization more fun and to incorporate Latin games into family and school time. Alone or with a group, students can be memorizing Latin vocabulary, grammar, and sayings while working a puzzle, stumping their big sister, or competing against Dad in a game of “Gladiator.” It is easy to use and highly recommended.
