How To Really Parent your Teenager (HRPT) written by Ross Campbell, MD, author of How to Really Love your Child, is a "self-help" parenting guidebook for parents of teenagers. HRPT contains 12 chapters, a study guide, notes, and suggestions for using the book in a group.
The first chapter is titled "A Stranger in the House," and it gives an overview of a parent's role in navigating the teen years. Following chapters deal with such things as anger, self-control, love, discipline, values, and anxiety and depression.
Interspersed throughout each chapter are key points in large print that draw your eye to read them. Three of my favorites are:
- Parenting and 'peaceful coexistence' don't go together."
- When you listen to what God says about you and reinforce it through self-talk, you provide your own encouragement to be strong."
- A teenager is like a mirror; she reflects what she is given."
I enjoyed reading HRPT. I recommend it to all parents of preteens and teenagers. We live in a fast-paced, media-fixated world and often need to be recharged as parents. I read numerous parenting books each year, and this is the best one yet. I can't think of a thing I would change, and I look forward to reading Dr. Campbell's next book.
