As a mommy in a military family, I was excited about the prospect of reviewing H is for Honor: A Military Family Alphabet. I'm familiar with some of Sleeping Bear Press's other alphabet books (B is for Buckaroo, et al.), so I knew what to expect as far as format; but I was truly amazed at the breadth of what this picture book contained.
Although most of the information is pertinent to the armed forces in general (veterans, descriptions of military radio call signals, importance of teamwork, etc.), there's also a lot of branch-specific detail. (Did you know that the U.S. Navy has more airplanes than boats?)
Despite the fact that this is a picture book, I think it would appeal most to older kids (if they can get past the alphabet format, which might seem a little condescending). My oldest son (an eleven-year-old) is the one in our family who seems to have enjoyed it the most, and there really is a lot of information in it to absorb. The illustrations are wonderful and add a lot to the overall quality of the book. From the flags on an aircraft carrier to the camouflage on the uniforms, the detail is amazing. You can almost see the waves moving in the picture that shows a U.S. Coast Guard rescue.
The title might be misleading. Military families will certainly enjoy this book, but any family would be able to appreciate the educational quality of it. This is a great introduction to the military for anyone who's interested in learning a little more about it.
