10 Days in the USA: The Unpredictable Game of Making Connections Review by Tom Parsons

How do you teach geography in a way that is more than just states and capitals? By playing 10 Days in the USA.

In this exciting board game, players must a chart a journey across the United States by plane, car, or on foot. The first player to successfully chart a ten-day journey wins. But successfully planning the trip may not necessarily be as easy as it sounds. A carefully planned journey can be thrown totally out of kilter by a single card. Therefore, flexibility and a good sense of direction are key to winning the game.

As we were putting this game to the test, the adults realized that they needed to brush up on their geography as the kids (ages 9 and 11) were holding their own against us. We found it challenging to make the connections as our navigation skills were being put to the test.

In the course of playing the game, you learn not only the names of all the states but also how they fit together. As a result, this is a great introduction to geography.

This game is recommended for ages 10 and up. Given the amount of strategy that is involved, that is a fair recommendation. Our 9-year-old daughter struggled a little with the strategic aspects of the game. Still, we found it to be quite enjoyable and a fun learning experience for the entire family.
