Jonathan You Left Too Soon is
a personal account of how the author, as a father and
pastor, came to a deeper and more mature faith as he
wrestled with the loss of his three-year-old son. The
author reveals his vulnerabilities and struggles in a
very real and intensely personal way. For the most part,
the account is given in a chronological fashion; it covers
the period right before his son's illness, the five-week
period of illness, his death, and the lengthy bereavement
period afterward. It describes the author's pain and
suffering as well as the many lessons learned.
This account is easily understood but painful. It could
be read by parents, older children, or as a family reading.
It would be especially appropriate and helpful for families
who are directly dealing with a loss of a loved one or
who are in a ministry of comfort and consolation to other
grieving individuals and families.
As a Christian mother and pastor's wife, I found this
book very educational and helpful. It is a great educational
tool on the grieving process as well as a direct yet
gentle rebuke against the errors of Job's friends in
the ministry of consolation. Through the use of Scriptures
and personal application, this book also encourages and
inspires. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this
book as a tool for the ministry of consolation within
the family and church.
