Scott Eash started his movie-making career years ago at the age of 10, and now has started SEM Distribution to help distribute Christian films for the purpose of "Equipping Christians with a biblical worldview." I reviewed three award-winning films distributed by SEM Distribution: Joel's
Journey ($12), and two short movies on one disc: The
White Handkerchief and Angel of Love ($18 for the Bonus Pack with both movies). The
White Handkerchief is a touching 13-minute modern-day version of the prodigal son. The story is told from the perspective of the prodigal as he goes on his journey and eventually finds his way back home. I thought the story was beautifully written, artfully acted and filmed, and inspiring! Angel
of Love is a 26-minute short movie that shows how a young girl's faith impacts a family desperately in need of God. The story is sweet and well produced. The message is clear without being overbearing. How wonderful to watch movies that honor God in such a joyful way!
Joel's Journey is a wonderful film, but it is not for the faint at heart! You will likely need a box of Kleenex, but you will also likely walk away inspired. Joel Morris was beloved by his family when he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer at the age of 3 and went to be with the Lord a short time later. This is the true story of Joel's life and his death, as told by his parents, 12 siblings, and other family and friends. After Joel was declared brain dead, one of the doctors even took the family to court asking the judge to force them to remove all life support, since he was already "dead". The family's struggle to uphold Biblical principles in the midst of a battle for the life of their son is a clear testimony to the value of every human life. As the adoptive parents of three beautiful children with Down syndrome, two who have undergone heart surgery, we have also paced the ICU halls many a night, and sat through yet another difficult doctor's appointment with yet another new diagnosis. Our beautiful five-year-old daughter has had three heart surgeries, and many miracle moments where God preserved her life through so many difficult challenges. Even though she cannot talk or walk (yet!), she touches the life of everyone who meets her. While our own experiences made it very emotional to watch Joel's
Journey (I held my daughter close!), we were so blessed to see a bold witness of the value of a human life, and the faith and love of this brave family. Joel's
Journey will inspire, encourage, and show that love has no boundaries. I would heartily recommend all three of these wonderful movies!
