Just David, by Eleanor H. Porter, is the story of a 10-year-old boy. I feel that the story is appropriate for a family read-aloud, although a younger or extra sensitive child might be saddened by some of the events of David's life.
David courageously lives through tragedy, and his actions teach others to look beyond what they see. Children and adults who have been bullied will find themselves "walking in David's shoes" as he gently deals with others who ignore or mistreat him.
I love older books (Just David was originally published in 1916) for both their simplicity and their high-quality writing. The characters are deep and well developed, especially David and his father.
If you are a fan of Lamplighter Books, you will most likely enjoy Just
David. David is an excellent role model for all boys, especially artistic ones. The story made me both laugh and cry--the sign of a good book in my opinion!
