In the DVD-recorded performance of I Am Dreaming of America:
Journey to Ellis Island, 1908, the Homeschool Dramatic Society in Cookeville, Tennessee, tells the story of a group of European immigrants who head off to find a better life in America. Written by Mary Evelyn Notgrass and performed by a group of talented homeschoolers, this story gives students a glimpse into life during this time in our nation's history.
Watching this DVD could be useful for a drama club or other homeschoolers hoping to see a good performance. Students learning about this period of history would enjoy the costumes as well as the folk dances and traditional songs. However, I think these dramas would be best watched in person. Somehow, something is lost in watching it on a TV. Stage dramas were meant to be experienced live. Although I think the play would be enjoyable in person, my family had a hard time sitting through the hour and a half performance on DVD.
