The Prince and the Pauper is another gem among the collection of recordings offered by Greathall productions. Mark Twain's story is set in England during the 1500s, and it offers an insightful perspective on social class as two boys from disparate backgrounds (i.e., a beggar and a prince) trade places. The result leads to distress, humor, sadness, and a good amount of social commentary.

Jim Weiss begins the recording by providing biographical information on Mark Twain and background on the story. One interesting fact is that The Prince and the Pauper mixes fictitious and real historical characters. Mr. Weiss retells the story with his characteristic passion and uncanny ability to create unique voices for all the characters. This adventurous tale is entertaining and thought-provoking.

This title and the several others my family owns have helped to broaden our children's appreciation of quality literature. The time spent listening to a Greathall Production story may not replace time spent reading aloud to my children, but it is time well spent. We are so grateful for the talent and inspiration Jim Weiss lends to all his recordings. This CD lists for $13.45 on the Greathall Productions website. It is geared for ages 7 and up.
