This CD is a collection of masterful mystery stories: Edgar Allan Poe's "The Purloined Letter," G.K. Chesterton's "The Blue Cross," and Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Red Headed League." Listening to this collection is like taking a mini survey course in the literary form of mystery. After listening to all three stories, one has gained experience with authors, characters, and stories of literary significance. Mr. Weiss's storytelling craft makes the various characters come alive and acquaints readers with different dialects based on the settings. The stories are set in England and France during the 1900s.
This story collection is recommended for ages 7 and up. Children will vary in their abilities to absorb the stories and their significance; parents can enhance the value of the experience by discussing the stories with their children. Our family owns several of the Greathall Production CD's. In most cases my two young children (now 5 and 6) have been able to digest and enjoy CDs meant for the 7 and up set. This particular set of stories requires a bit more thinking ability. The plots require some attention to details and the ability to observe the sequence of events. My 6-year-old son has learned to really enjoy this CD, but he has listened to it several times now.
I consider this CD a wonderful asset because it has stretched my son's thinking ability and opened his eyes to a new literary style. It doesn't get much better than that. This CD lists for $13.45 on the Greathall Productions website.
