Queen Sheba's Ring Review by Camilla Anderson

Queen Sheba's Ring is a 300-page book by the author of the better-known King Solomon's Mines. The reading level of this book is probably appropriate for the 6th grade reading level through adult. It would also make an excellent read-aloud story. Even though the story has historical, archeological, and geographical elements, it is purely fiction and therefore would not be a good supplement for any school courses.

The story is about four Englishmen in the late 1800s who take an adventure together to rescue an African princess who is supposedly a direct descendant of Queen Sheba. She rules a tribe of people who have been surrounded by an enemy and cut off from the world. If these four can help her, she has promised them all the treasure, rich antiquities, and gold they can carry. Every turn seems to bring nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat treachery, danger, and plot twists. The men use all their skills, wisdom, and courage to complete this mission, with the help of Providence. This is a story for boys (with lions, fierce warriors, spies, betrayal, explosives, hunting, wilderness survival, and treasure) as well as girls (with a beautiful princess and a love story)--a winner for all.

I am always seeking to find good books for my avid readers--books that are well written, entertaining, intriguing, full of godly character and wisdom, and devoid of worldly philosophies. I am happy to report this book fits the bill fairly closely. While not a Christian book per se, it is a good, clean, old-fashioned adventure novel that is written in a unique and captivating style. I enjoyed reading it. My son (15) has read it twice so far.

My son is very picky about the books he keeps. On his shelf you will find Lamplighter Publishing books, the Little Britches series, Mark Twain, The Bronze Bow, Hittite Warrior, and maybe one or two others. I asked him if Queen Sheba's Ring was a keeper, and he didn't even let me finish the question before yelling, "Yeah!" I don't endorse many books, either! But this is a winner of a fiction novel. I'm pleased to have discovered it!
