Hearing a diagnosis of autism for one's child can be a sad and frightening experience.
In this honest and transparent narrative, Kelly Langston describes her own journey
with her son, Alec, through the challenges of autism. In the process, Langston
reveals the hidden blessings of autism as she learned to view God as the "Promise
Maker"; God has a unique purpose even for autistic children.
The book opens with the frustration of a young mother dealing with a toddler in full tantrum mode at the local Target store. Then there is the fear and loneliness of discovery when the diagnosis is rendered. It is not long before the only option is total surrender to God--and the miracle that follows our obedience. Langston captures the idea of God as Promise Maker in the practical experiences she and Alec share as the story progresses. His promises are our lifeline to overcome autism, and the anchor to this lifeline is our trust of, and obedience to, God.
Essential principles gleaned from this book can be a blessing to anyone--even those unaffected by autism. The promise of refreshment and renewal, or wisdom, or the power of love to overcome is there for all of us. However, Ms. Langston applies these principles to challenge families who are walking with autism day to day. Among these challenges are depression, bullying, the future, burnout, and lack of communication. They translate to God's promise of hope, God's promise of our incredible worth, God's promise of a future, and so forth.
Well supported by Scripture in the narrative, the book also features a collection of Scripture at the end of each chapter. These "Promises to Treasure" reinforce the encouragement bound up in Langston's wonderful story. Resources at the end of the book provide additional encouragement and a reminder that you are not alone in the battle. These resources conclude with some straight talk from Langston's husband, Matt, with a message to dads; it could well be an outline of a second book as his brief notes are very practical.
Autism's Hidden Blessings is filled with the realism and challenge of walking with autism, tempered by the hope and optimism that come with God's promises.
