Consider the Lilies is a devotional designed for mothers and young ladies to
share. The author, Teresa Nuckols, weaves personal stories together with poetry
and many Biblical references. Topics addressed in the book include fellowship
with God, developing a heart of worship, how to walk in humility and how to reflect
the beauty of God.
Each chapter of Consider the Lilies begins with a beautiful pen-and-ink illustration of flowers or garden scenes followed by a poem addressing the topic. Teresa Nuckols is expressive in sharing her experiences with each topic and tying her thoughts together with meaningful Scriptures from the King James Version.
I think that Consider the Lilies would make a nice devotional for Christian women. I believe it would especially appeal to older women and women with nostalgic or conservative thinking. Unfortunately, I'm not convinced that the average young girl would be kept attentive with such an old-fashioned feel to the writing. The writer has a good heart, and her stories keep the flow alive and readable to adults. But at times the book seems a bit dry. I thought the chapters were a little long, and there were moments when I felt like I was reading sermon notes instead of a women's devotional. I'm not really sure that the author knew her audience. For example, the title uses the word "girl" to describe the audience, and the cover has a lovely picture of a young girl reading the bible. However, my daughter was bored while reading this devotional with me, and it wasn't long before she asked that I continue reading it on my own.
Women who enjoy poetry will probably enjoy the organization of Consider
the Lilies and the dainty feel it evokes. I would recommend this devotional to them. However, I wouldn't be quick to recommend this book to young girls due to the dryness and its grown-up "womanly" feel.
