This is a short (41-page) account of the author's survival of US Airways Flight 1549, which landed in the Hudson River on its way from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, on January 15, 2009. The author, at the beginning stages of his career, was in the process of interviewing for dermatology internship positions.
After a blow-by-blow account of personal events leading up to the landing and the flight itself, the bulk of the book deals with Andrew Jamison's faith and his understanding of God's sovereignty. He has a unique perspective, having survived such a potentially life-threatening situation. Dr. Jamison lists and explains the many effects of the crash: a reassessment of his purpose and God's plan for him, psychological protection, marital closeness, and a greater trust in the Lord. Some of the long-term benefits of his experience are an assurance of his salvation, total reliance on God with every aspect of his life, and a story to tell others that segues into spiritual issues.
The book has some inconsistencies in verb tense, as well as some awkward sentences and several comma splices. These are unfortunate and distracting in an otherwise interesting first-person retelling of a life-changing event. Cleaner editing would have been much appreciated.
Although this book is not traditional educational material, it would be an excellent book for older students to read and discuss with their parents, as it touches on significant personal faith matters.
