A Pocket for Corduroy . . . and More Stories
about Friendship is part of the Storybook Treasures DVD
series from Scholastic. This
DVD features three classic children's storybooks: A
Pocket for Corduroy, Blue Burt and Wiggles, and Big
Al. Each story is voiced,
signed in American Sign Language (ASL), and includes read-along
captions. Illustrations from the books provide a lovely and
calm backdrop for the sign language narrator. Beautiful original
music scores set the tone for the stories. The DVD has a running
time of 38 minutes for the three stories. Also included on
the DVD are several extras, including an ASL alphabet finger-spelling
tutorial, interactive comprehension quizzes for each story, and
20 sign language vocabulary words per story for a total of 60 ASL
vocab words! A Pocket for Corduroy is recommended
for ages 2-9.
This DVD really has something for every child. Early sign
language learning is beneficial for fine motor skills and increased
vocabulary. The read-aloud captions are perfect for children
who are learning to read or new readers. My three daughters,
ages 8, 5, and 22 months each enjoyed the DVD. My 5-year-old
especially loved it. She had fun trying to read along with
the captions on the screen. She also enjoyed the interactive
comprehension quizzes. The selected stories are fun, entertaining,
and wholesome. The format also provides a great
deal of educational value. I am happy to put this DVD on for my
children.
