To my surprise, there is much more to know about sunflowers than
I ever imagined! This terrific little e-book unit study on Sensational
Sunflowers turned out to be fun and educational for our entire
family!
When the study is printed out, it includes stunning full-color
photographs and wonderful ready-to-use notebooking pages! Our kids
really enjoyed the copywork, which includes space for artwork.
The copywork pages come in several different handwriting styles
to accommodate preschoolers through late grammar school by having
students either trace or copy manuscript or cursive. The information
about growing our own sunflowers also explained how to prepare
and eat our harvest. There are hyperlinks to articles, information,
and photos throughout the study. Though it's exciting to see the
large 20 foot sunflowers "spring up" in your garden, this study
could be done any time during the year, with students growing smaller
sunflower varieties indoors.
Sensational Sunflowers is quite a nice unit to include
in a general year-long botany study because it can be completed
is a fairly short time, or it can be broken up into sub-units and
interspersed throughout your botany study. The simple science experiments
are perfect for families with multi-age students, as the material
can be easily adapted to accommodate many age levels simultaneously.
The notebooking pages are nicely laid out, and multiple copies
can be easily printed so that each student can record personal
observations and learning activities independently. Also included
in the back of the study are helpful Web page links where you can
learn more about sunflowers, additional activities, and related
crafts! The online resources utilized in creating this unit are
also hyperlinked for older students to research.
A sample of Sensational Sunflowers can be viewed at www.theoldschoolhousestore.com/,
and it is available for purchase for only $4.95! Not only do I
recommend this study, but after reviewing this unit I would encourage
readers to consider other units published by The Old Schoolhouse.
If TOS's other units are as well documented, designed, and laid
out as this one, our family plans to use these short units often!
