The Bible in the Ancient World is a comprehensive history and geography Bible curriculum. Volume 1 consists of one CDROM in PDF Format and requires only a Bible as an outside source to complete. The curriculum is written to the student so no formal teacher's manual is needed.

The 18 lessons covered in this volume include Bible chronology, geography, and eight historical periods of the Old Testament. Throughout the lessons you'll find:

  • Easy to read historical commentary
  • Inspiring and detailed photographs of Israel and Egypt
  • Charts and Graphs
  • Maps which are used to trace travels and events from the Old Testament
  • A bit of humor scattered throughout

Each lesson concludes with a Bible reading assignment that helps wrap up the lesson. Flash cards are included along with quizzes that help keep the student on track with what they are learning.

The Bible in the Ancient World is geared for 6th grade and up, however it can easily be used by younger children with teacher or parent help. The program can be used as a one semester Bible, History or Geography course, but could also be used by the non-homeschooling family as an extra Bible study resource. It would even make a great tool to be used in family devotional times.

I used The Bible in the Ancient World this past semester as part of our History Curriculum. We used it in conjunction with two well-known homeschool history resources, and it fit in perfectly as we were studying History starting with Genesis. The wonderful pictures and maps were my favorite part as we were able to really "see" Biblical history as we were studying it.

The only downside to this curriculum was the lack of practical application. While a Bible reading assignment is given at the end of each lesson, it would have been nice to see a few projects included. When using it in conjunction with another program this isn't a problem, however as a stand-alone curriculum this is an area that could be improved.

We enjoyed using The Bible in the Ancient World and I would recommend it as a supplement to any History Curriculum, or as a stand-alone Bible Study. Either way, you will walk away with a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the ancient land of the Old Testament.
