Get ready to sing, dance, and play! Created for toddlers and preschoolers, Oum is
an energizing, interactive, early-learning game on DVD. Winner
of the Tillywig Brain Child Award and 2010 DVD of the Year Award
from Creative Child Magazine, this DVD is sure to entertain, educate,
and stimulate your child's senses.
This DVD features three colorful and talented Muppet-like characters,
very similar to the ones seen on Sesame Street. Oum, the main character,
invites children to watch and interact with his two friends, Mimi
and Coco, who teach early-learning concepts through music and physical
activity. Mimi is bright pink, wears ribbons, and loves to laugh
and sing, and Coco is a brown mouse who likes to move.
The DVD is divided into three separate sessions that last about
15 minutes each. In session 1, children play the Statue Game and
Dance, sing a nursery rhyme with Mimi about body parts, and learn
about rhythm by moving along to fast and slow music. In session
2, children learn about intensity of sound by soft and loud clapping
and learn about tempo through a song about a ferret. Children learn
about high and low pitch, and Coco reinforces the identification
of body parts. In session 3, children sing and act out a song about
a mouse, pretend to be a growing plant, and mimic animal sounds
and movements.
I watched Oum with my daughter who will turn six in
June, and she thought she was a little too old for the DVD. However,
having worked in daycare many years ago, I know this DVD would
have been a huge hit in the toddler room! I think it would be perfect
in daycare and preschool settings, where children are motivated
by each other to get up and move along, or in homes where there
are young children ages 1-5. Also, children who are familiar with
Sesame Street will most likely be drawn to Oum and his friends.
I think three of my nephews who are age 4 and under will enjoy
watching this DVD when I pass it along to them!
