These two DVDs are each 90 minutes long and have 3 episodes each.
The back of the case says that they are for ages 3-10. The Jobz4Dogz DVD
has Rescue K-9, Police K-9, and Hollywood K-9 segments. The Amazing
Heroes DVD has Firefighters, Police Officers, and Rescue
Workers segments. Both DVDs had a lot of good information on them.
The people being interviewed were very interesting. The hosts on
both, however, while trying to inject humor, came off as merely
silly. For instance, the female host ("Hero-ologist") of the Amazing
Heroes video comes out in a police uniform and says, "I look just
like a real policewoman." Her sleeves are hanging about three inches
past her hands (which aren't even visible), and her gun is strapped
right in the front of her waist. I don't think I've ever seen any
police officer with a weapon there. That is just one of many, many
silly things on this DVD. I found it distracting and disappointing.
Having said that, I am not the target audience of these DVDs, and
my 5-year-old granddaughter was not as critical of them. I don't
think she found them hilariously funny, but they were fast-paced
and had a lot of good footage, so they held her attention. The
Hollywood segment of the Jobz4Dogz DVD had an American
Idol spoof for dogs, and I'm pretty sure kids 3-10 aren't going
to get all the innuendos, and I didn't want to. I just felt like
there was so much good stuff here, why ruin it will all the silliness?
The Jobz4Dogz DVD has a special features section for
bloopers.
I believe the subjects of these DVDs are good subjects for social
studies classes in your homeschool. Certainly, we want our children
to learn about firemen, police officers, and rescue workers; and
K-9 dogs are always of interest to children. These DVDs contain
a lot of good information. They sell for 7.95 each on Dream Big
Production's website, or you can buy both for $14.95.
