This past spring at a homeschool convention, I received information about Milltown Pride, a 2010 movie production by Unusual Films (a division of Bob Jones University). I didn't have a lot of time to stop and visit at the booth, so I took a business card and soon forgot about it. Then, the opportunity presented itself to review the film, and I jumped at the chance.

As a Christian homeschool family who made the decision years ago to cut our cable television service, we entertain ourselves with movies. It's not always easy to find decent, family-friendly movies these days, though. I love that there are companies stepping up to the plate to change that!

Milltown Pride is set in South Carolina in the 1920s. It's the story of Will Wright, whose goal in life is to play baseball. Will decides that, in order to fulfill his dreams, he'll need to leave behind his "easy" life (as part of a wealthy family) and take a job at a local textile mill in order to play for the company baseball team. He quickly rises to local stardom, but it's not without its trials and temptations. Will makes some bad decisions and gets involved in some things that he shouldn't. Through it all, the gospel is presented in a clear and prominent way.

Our family really enjoyed Milltown Pride. It was a great family movie with a clear message and lots of discussion starters. In addition to family entertainment, this movie would be a great thing to share with a Sunday school class or small group. A PDF devotional guide is available to download from the website; it includes discussion starters on the topics of Pleasing God or Pleasing Self, Hypocrisy, Who or What are You Serving?, Salvation, and New Life in Christ.

I commend BJU for their production of this film. The film itself is of excellent quality, and the actors and actresses did a tremendous job. I hope to see more great movies from Unusual Films.
