Life can be very different in other countries. The best way to
see this, of course, is to travel. But not many of us can do this,
so the next best thing is to watch a video showing what life is
like in faraway places. And Families of the World has some wonderful
videos that show how children live in other countries.
The Families of Kenya DVD shows how two different boys,
both 11 years old, go about their day. The first boy lives in the
city of Nairobi. He does his morning chores, goes to school, and
then plays with his friends. We see some of his weekend activities
as he visits relatives, attends church, and watches tribal dances.
The second boy lives in rural Kenya on a farm. He does chores,
eats breakfast, and then walks an hour to school. He takes us through
his day as he learns, plays with his friends, and then returns
home to his family. A safari is also described and shown during
this part.
The 30-minute program has a boy talking in first person as the
camera follows him through his day. It is simple, yet it shows
an honest look at life in Kenya. It was interesting to see the
contrast between the city boy and the rural boy and how their days
differed. For us, a family that lives in the United States, it
was definitely an eye opener to see what life is like in Africa.
This DVD would be very useful as part of a unit study on geography
or even as a complement to a social studies curriculum.
