Do you have a student who needs some extra help with knowing when
to use a comma or knowing which homophone to use in a sentence?
Shawna Huggins, professional tutor, has written Grammar and
Punctuation Made Easy, a 25-page softcover instruction guide
that helps students understand just how easy grammar can be!
Divided into eight easy-to-read chapters, this book is simple
enough for students to read on their own. Chapters 1-6 cover comma
usage, and each chapter follows four easy steps:
- Read the rule.
- Study the examples.
- Look at the summary.
- Write sentences using the comma rule correctly.
In chapter 7 students will learn how to correctly use certain
problem words. Examples include word pairs like then/than, its/it's,
and whose/who's--just to name a few. I used this chapter to remind
my 4th grader and 7th grader that "a lot" is always two words!
Shawna also gives a great tip for remembering how to spell separate--a
tip that I wish I had known when I was in school.
Chapter 8 provides a list of additional educational resources
and a list of some of Shawna's favorite sites for learning toys.
I think this book is a useful tool for struggling grammar students
to have on hand whenever they are writing. It's small and thin
enough to keep in a desk drawer and pull out as needed. I will
definitely refer my children to this book when they have trouble
with commas. Given the affordable price of $7.99, don't hesitate
to make grammar and punctuation easy for your students, too!
