Explorers of the New World is a book written for children
ages 9 to 12, and it covers explorers from Prince Henry the Navigator
in the early 1400s through Samuel de Champlain in the early 1600s.
This book is 120 pages long and is divided into six chapters, which
are titled "Searching for a Water Route to Asia," "Voyage to the
New World, Christopher Columbus," "Searching for the Northwest
Passage, John Cabot," "Circling the Globe, Ferdinand Magellan," "The
Spanish Conquistadors," and "Journeys Inland." The book begins
with a timeline and concludes with a glossary, a list of resources,
and an index.
Each chapter is filled with information about the individual explorers
and their expeditions. The text is easy to read, and there are
boxes throughout that highlight and define words the student may
not know. Each chapter concludes with hands-on projects--there are
22 total projects in the book. Projects include making sea biscuits,
making a compass, and making an ocean in a bottle.
Explorers of the New World: Discover the Golden Age of Exploration is
a great supplement to any history program--or a fun book just to
leave out for your children to pick up. The information is interesting,
and the projects add a bit of hands-on learning without being overwhelming.
I'd recommend this book to anyone studying the major explorers.
