What's Looking at You, Kid? is a delightful rhyming children's poem. Each two page spread is one stanza. Each verse uses 3 rhyming words such as far, star, jar to form one rhyme scheme. This hardcover book is sturdy, colorful, and being approximately 9" x 9" is not too large for a small child to hold alone.

I have been enjoying this book with my developmentally delayed daughter, whose skills fall in the four to six year old category. This book is great for children in that age range. I love that this book can be used to develop language arts skills such as expressive language (have the child name the creature or animal on the page), or rhyming.   The page about the ladybug even includes a bit of math as the child is encouraged to count the dots!

Each time that we read the book, we read it straight through cover to cover, but because each two page spread can stand alone, it would be easy to incorporate a bit of the book each day as part of preschool or kindergarten lessons. For example, the stanza about the crab could be used as an introduction for a study of the ocean, or the stanzas of the butterfly and caterpillar would go great with a study of butterflies.

The book is charming and funny. It grabs your eye. Though intended for my special needs daughter, my typical 13 year old daughter could also be found thumbing through the book. She even listened in a time or two when I read the book aloud. This is the kind of book that an older sibling wouldn't mind reading to a younger sibling. I think I'll encourage my teenage daughters to include this book in their "what to read to the children I babysit" collection.
