Boy, Bird, and Dog is a picture book for beginning readers. Boy
and Bird are up in the tree house, and Dog wants to join them,
but he can't climb the ladder. Boy figures out a way to haul Dog
up, and all three friends enjoy the view. Boy is then able to use
his system to haul up cookies from Mom, and all three enjoy the
treat.
The illustrations in Boy, Bird, and Dog are very sweet, as is
the plot. However, the sentences are extremely short and choppy,
even for a beginning reader, and the grammar is troubling at times.
For instance, when Boy, Bird, and Dog are in the tree house looking
out at the yard, the sentence used to describe this is "They saw
and saw." This is not what I want my beginning reader to view as
an acceptable sentence (and it is repeated). I think there are
better options available for beginning readers, so I would recommend
skipping Boy, Bird, and Dog.
