This curriculum is for grades Pre-K through 3.
It consists of three DVDs (Health, Happiness, and Relationships)
and a spiral bound Teacher's Guide. Also included were three DVDs
on the three individual subjects stated above, along with the same
episodes and songs as in the Classroom Edition. Each episode on
these DVDs consists of a discussion of the subject matter, and
a Broadway song that illustrates the concept. There is some information
given about the origins of the songs. Worksheets and activities
are given to go along with each episode. The covers of the DVD
contain the statement "holistic wellness for young children," and
this statement sums up the content of this curriculum. Health,
relationships, emotions, feelings, social interaction etc. are
covered in the lessons.
For example, the lesson entitled, My Emotions, uses the song "When
the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along." The episode on
the DVD talks about positive emotions. There is a template provided
for a book that the children can make, in which they draw pictures
of times when they had a positive emotion. Another lesson,
entitled "Sense of Smell" under the Science Activities section,
uses the song, "Grandma's Feather Bed." The object is to
have students identify smells that evoke positive emotions. The
activity is to put different scents (vanilla, lemon, peppermint,
etc.) on cotton balls, and put them in individual baby food jars.
Have the children identify the scents. The take-home activity sheet
for this one is called "I Smelled It First Game." The lessons are
geared more to classrooms full of students, but can be adapted
to individual homeschool students.
I think this would be a wonderful curriculum for use in a preschool
or Christian school, but the cost might be prohibitive for homeschoolers.
The Classroom Edition, with the Teacher's Guide, is $249. The individual
home edition DVDs are $19.95 each, and would be more feasible for
the average homeschool family. There are additional resources available
on the website. I will enjoy using this in my homeschool, as I
have a preschooler who loves music. Broadway show tunes will be
right up her alley!
