Day by day devotionals tend to run along the same
lines. The author picks a verse, thinks about it, and then writes
a devotional on it. That's not to say that those devotionals are
bad. They are nice, and I've read some good ones. Still, what about
something different? What about something that steps outside the
box? The One Year Women's Friendship Devotional is that
type of unusual book. It is an inspiring set of devotions
to be done daily, which is intended for any woman, no matter what
stage of life in which she finds herself. The authors mingle stories
with challenging thoughts, and end each devotional with a prayer
(which facilitates as a guide) in the particular issue that was
covered. These are designed to be done individually, or with a
friend. If you are the type of person that likes to meditate
on the Scriptures by yourself, or if you like to bounce your thoughts
off of a friend, this book will fit you.
Each week has its own theme, such as:
- Cultivating a Heart for Your Home
- Embracing Today
- Conquering Stress
- A Fresh-Brewed Prayer Life
- Giving Yourself a Break
- Avoiding the Comparison Trap
- Caring for Our Bodies
At the end of each week, a set of questions are given to provide
food for thought. If desired, these questions can be discussed
with a friend in person, through email, or whichever method of
communication is preferred. I enjoyed reading the quotes, which
were intended to complete the thoughts given for the day. However,
I am not partial to the idea of quoting someone like Oprah Winfrey.
Although she does have good ideas, I don't think she should have
a place in a Christian devotional. All in all, if you are looking
for a gift for a friend, or if you just want some added encouragement,
this book would fit the bill.
