Early Bird Readers is a set of 12 colorfully illustrated books for the beginning reader. Included in the kit are flashcards for every word ( over 125 basic vocabulary words), awards, bookmarks and a parent/teacher guide. I really enjoyed reading these books with my son. The print is large so there is no eye strain and tracking is easy for the beginner. The themes are very appealing to children pertaining to family life, friends and childhood. Each story is filled with Christian values. Jesus is pictured with the children in every volume. All is neatly packaged in a convenient storage box.
Now I am not one that usually would purchase a great quantity of early readers. I would most likely go to the library, but my son was asking to read these everyday. He actually looked forward to reading about Tommy and his friend Meg. Because the Christian themes are so enjoyable, the pages so colorful, and the type so easy for young eyes this is one set I not only would purchase, but I would set out in our book basket for my son to read for himself during his quiet time.
Note, however, that this is a sight reading program. Bob Jones University has stated in a pilot program that I used, that special needs children learn to read faster when sight reading is introduced first and followed by a phonics program. If your child is having trouble with phonics, why not try this program (it is such a nice one) and then, try again later with phonics. Children who are already reading at a 1st or 2nd grade level will also enjoy these books!
