Worthy Is the Lamb ($20.00) is a lovely book of Puritan poetry compiled by Maureen Bradley from Soli Deo Gloria Publications. As Ms. Bradley points out in the introduction to the book, the Puritans' poetry expressed their deep faith in God and a lifetime spent seeking His face and His will. The book consists of 22 sections of poetry on topics such as the Sabbath, death, Heaven, God the Creator, the Gospel of Christ, and so on.
The sections include brief but inspiring introductions by Ms. Bradley that seek to share the heart of the Puritans on that particular topic. Before reading Worthy Is the Lamb, I was concerned that Puritan poetry would be difficult to understand because of the language that was often so different from our own. However, I found the poems to be beautiful and inspiring. The range of poetry speaks to the understanding the Puritans had of God as an integral part of each area of our lives. The theology is deep and Biblical, often profound, but understandable.
This comprehensive and lovely book inspired us. I think it would be well suited for junior high and senior high school students. It would fit well within a study of the Puritans, or for a unit study or supplement of history, language arts, or even a study of theology. It would also be wonderful for family or personal devotionals or for encouragement on difficult days! Students who don?t like poetry might even find themselves enjoying the work of their talented ancestors.
The works are unabashedly Christian, often presenting the gospel in a clear and understandable way. My only complaint about the book is that I would love to have more historical context presented in the introduction or a first chapter explaining the thinking and lives of the Puritans. It would also be interesting to have some artwork from the time period scattered throughout the book for visual learners. I would highly recommend this wonderful book for homeschooling families!
