Today my son and I read Jingle the Brass by Patricia Newman. The vivid illustrations were done by Michael Chesworth. This book is about the lingo of the railroad. I have never heard some of these words before, and some of them are colorful and interesting. The story starts with a young boy who walks into a restaurant to meet a "hogger." He joins him on his train to spend the day with him and at the same time he learns the railroad lingo. Because the book is full of vocabulary related to the railroad, it was an appealing way to learn new words for my son.
The book also includes a glossary with definitions of the words. My son and I enjoyed reading this book and the pictures made the book come alive. This is Patricia Newman's first book, and she did a fantastic job with her subject matter. I will be watching for her future books, especially if they are as fun and educational as Jingle the Brass. If you have a train-loving child, this is the perfect book for him!
