Search the Scriptures is a reprint of an older series of covenantal Bible teachings written by one of the great leaders of the Covenant Reformed Church, Dr. Cornelius Vanderwaal. The volume I reviewed is Genesis and Exodus. At first glance, the coil bound notebook reads like most basic bible studies. Read the passage, read the analysis, fill in the blanks. But upon deeper inspection it becomes clear that there is more to it than that. The philosophy of the Covenant Reformed Church has been to show people that the whole Bible matters, and is literally correct as written, and that the Old Testament has much to tell us about the New and vice versa.
Dr. Vanderwaal emphasizes the three dimensions of their covenant relationship; God's promise, our obligation, and God's warning if we reject either. Now I am not a theologian and I am not a historian of the Covenant Reformed Church. But I do love the Lord and seek to build a deeper relationship with Him. This study could help me learn about God and humanity and the "loving, gracious, and sin-forgiving bond which unites the two - the covenant." I believe in the covenant and I believe in the sin cleansing blood of Jesus Christ. I am going to try to enjoy this study and delve a little deeper into what the Old Testament books of Genesis and Exodus have to teach me about that which was yet to come, but already foretold. I am excited about it, and I like the format of the book that allows me to write my own thoughts and answers right in the book, thereby creating a journal of my own.
I am not a member of the Reformed Church and I do have questions that arise from my studying. Covenant Press represents an amazing group of people dedicated to reprinting and publishing those books and products which can help us to live a wholesome and Godly life. I am not going to debate their theology with them, or with myself. I will simply tell you this is a very interesting study and I encourage you to check out their products and see for yourself.
