The Harbor Light is a charming hard cover children's book about a harbor light that despises his job as a lighthouse at first, but then realizes the importance of what he does. It tells the story of the trouble he gets into when he tries to be something he was not made to be. The story parallels the Christian's walk in this dark world. It introduces such character traits as responsibility, self-esteem, kindness, compassion and obedience. Young children will be introduced to these concepts in a stimulating way that leads them to cherish these character traits. There is also a page in the back of the book to give parents a little idea and lesson on how exactly to talk about the spiritual implications of the story.
I first read this story to my three and two year olds and they loved it. It became an instant favorite with them asking for it multiple times throughout the day. The main character is something they rarely encounter in children's books so it caught their attention. At times there are words like "CRASH!" and "CLICK!" which caught their attention as well. This book is written for the younger preschool audience in mind and my preschoolers greatly appreciated it.
I loved the book because I?m looking for Christian-themed children's books that aren't preaching at my children. It isn't a short story, but the children's attention is held amazingly well through the beautiful pictures and wording. At times I could read a little more into the story than what I believe the author intended, but that is up to whoever is reading the story and how much you want your children to get out of it. The main point of the story is to let your Christian light shine and not to be ashamed of how God has changed your heart. That's what other people need to see and that's how we can be Jesus to them!
Overall, I loved this book and highly recommend it to any parent with preschool children. It's a great introduction to why we sing the song, "This Little Light of Mine".
