Among the Brave was published in 2004 by Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers. Hurrah! Book number five of "The Shadow Children" series is out, and it is a page-turner!
For those who are not familiar with the fantasy/science fiction series, it is set at some undetermined future date when a General Terus (or Shelton, depending on which book you red) has ousted the government due to riots. The riots were caused by food shortages and an instituted "Population Police" that enforces a law that allows families to have only two children. The book revolves around a group of third-borns who try to save themselves and others like them.
In this book, the head of the Population Police, Aldous Krakenaur, overthrows the General and things go from bad to worse. These books have a lot of excitement, adventure, action, and tension. Two things I like about these books are that there is no bad language and while the government is officially atheist those who are working to save the third children seem to be motivated by a faith in God. Also, good character traits such as courage (even when afraid), loyalty, and friendship are portrayed by the heroes. Language level: nothing objectionable. Ages: 10-16. My recommendation: good (very good!).
