The White Isle is a wonderfully written book set in the Roman years. The main character is Lavinia, the 13-year-old daughter of Publius Favonius Claudius. She lives in a grand old house, happy and cheerful, until all her family must move away to Britannia within five days! She, although somewhat disturbed, continues with her joyful, young life. Then her mother tells her that her father plans on marrying Lavinia to Decimus, a rude young man who cares nothing about her. She won't even be going along with her family, but will be left behind. She knows she has no choice, but why must she marry the man who told her to her face that she was ugly? And why have to marry while still so young? This book is written for ages 10 and up. It tells the way an ancient city would be like to live in, while also explaining the everyday life of a young girl. Enjoy!
