This selection of amazing stories is translated from the original Dutch. Written for Reformed audiences, but enjoyed by all, every story is a treat to read. My 16-year-old daughter says Captain My Captain is one of THE BEST stories she has ever read. This is high praise from one who devours novels on an almost daily basis. The story is all about a young woman who travels with her husband in the early days of shipping and winds up captaining their boat around the Cape. This adventurous story will keep any homeschool teen enthralled. All of Inheritance Publications stories are entertaining and historically accurate. Most that I read were set in the time of the Reformation; these are not your “average” take on history. Life was very different for young Huguenots in the 1600s and many gave up everything for their faith. As the books were truly eye opening and intriguing, I enjoyed them very much. My eight-year-old enjoyed Teddy’s Button; it was an excellent opportunity to discuss what life was like during the time of the story as compared to how he lives his life today.

Inheritance Publications also publishes many Bible stories. I received several hard backed stories as well as a CD that contains all the stories in the Word of the King series. The CD is fun because the story is read to the children and they can follow along in their own book. I personally liked the book version. The pictures are superbly illustrated and exquisitely detailed. Each book has a full color picture on the front and black and white ink drawings inside. This series makes an excellent early reader set, perfect for the beginning six to seven-year-old. A word to the wise however, these are biblically accurate representations, and, although my son loved it, I would have preferred a less graphic picture of David’s conquest over Goliath.

The stories for children are all just excellent. My kids were worried at first that they would be old-fashioned. Once we started reading, that concern fled quickly. They were captivated by all of them and, as the novels progressed, the children were even more interested, often not wanting them to end.

Inheritance Publications in Canada is a small but growing publishing house. They translate and publish an astonishing array of books for all ages, from pre-K on up to adult. Also available from Inheritance Publications are music books, scores, and CDs. Please check their website and request a catalog. This in itself is an experience because the whole front half of the catalogue is a novel! You actually get a whole, exciting story as well as the catalog. My family and I all highly recommend Inheritance Publications - you will enjoy them!
