This tape set is quite exciting to me. Our family loves to listen to classic literature at night. We all cuddle up on the couch or in our bed and just listen. It is great bonding time. Later we discuss what images were cast into our imagination. I've also used tapes with students who find reading challenging. They can read along or just listen. One other use is for ESOL students. Hearing the language spoken correctly helps people learning to speak and write English correctly. Moreover, the vocabulary is enhanced by the context clues rather than endless word lists.

The stories included in this 40-cassette set are

A Tale of Two Cities (9 cassettes)
A Christmas Carol (3 cassettes)
Great Expectations (5 cassettes)
The Scarlet Letter (4 cassettes)
The Pickwick Papers (excerpts) (1 cassette)
Dr. Marigold?s Prescriptions (1 cassette)
The Tell Tale Heart & The Red Headed League (1 cassette)
Les Miserables (6 cassettes)
Pride & Prejudice (excerpts) (1 cassette)
The Secret Agent (1 cassette)
The Adventures of Don Quixote (excerpts) (1 cassette)
The Count of Monte Cristo (excerpts) (1 cassette)
The Call of the Wild (excerpts) (1 cassette)
The Man without a Country (2 cassettes)
Markheim (1 cassette)
A Descent into the Maelstrom (1 cassette)
The Man and the Snake & The Bearded Window (1 cassette)

Many families want something to do together. Listening is a great option, and the conversations afterwards are almost as engaging as the book itself. As parents, you can choose the tapes or let the children select from your collection. Listening encourages focus as we draw pictures in our mind. My children have built their confidence enough to say that they pictured a person, place, or event differently than a producer of a video might project on the screen. They have learned that there are no budgets for the "sets" they create in their mind. Furthermore, many times they imagine the main character has a stunning likeness to people they know. Listening can truly be priceless.
