Lost Classics Book Company publishes children's stories and textbooks from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their mission statement reads, "We believe that building children's character should go hand in hand with their education. With this aim we are bringing you great books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that teach and entertain while encouraging virtues like love of country, service to others, self-discipline, honesty, and honor. In a world that worships the new, we are resurrecting the values of an earlier, more enduring America, free from the modern trappings of political correctness and revisionism. Our mission is to republish the finest textbooks, readers and historical novels of the past."
They currently publish books in the following categories: American History, Biography, English Grammar, and Historical Fiction (mostly G.A. Henty and Oliver Optic). I reviewed two books from the English Grammar group. Primary Language Lessons was written for the second and third grades and Intermediate Language Lessons was written for the fourth through sixth grades. These books contain dictation drills, memorization of literature, composition exercises, letter writing exercises, grammar rules, punctuation, public speaking, debate, and more. This is not a mind numbing workbook, but a parent/teacher instruction manual to teach children proper English grammar. You will need a notebook and dictionary to go along with both books.
If you want a change of pace from English workbooks, or like older textbooks, you will love Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons. Emma Serl, who was a teacher in the early 20th century, wrote both books. She believed that children needed interesting material and lots of drill to learn proper English. Both books contain good literature and lovely artwork (you will get a course in art as well as English grammar). Check out the Lost Classics Book Company to see a complete list of books they offer or call them at 888-611-BOOK to order a catalog.
