Our older children are piano students, with a faithful teacher that we adore. The parents in our home, however, are not music students. It is a tricky thing to teach musical notation without knowing it oneself! So we have found Quick Notes by Learning Lore to be a helpful tool. This set of 36 flashcards does an excellent job of providing drill on musical notation. These are large (8.5 x 11), laminated for durability, and easy to read. If you lose things as easily as I do, I recommend storing them in a binder for safekeeping.

The recommended schedule is to start with three cards and then add one to three cards a day. While sitting at the piano, the flashcard is presented, the key pressed to show the location on the keyboard, and the key named. The student repeats the information, and then new cards are added. They also have suggested games to reinforce the information. Recommended for ages four through adult, I may finally learn musical notation too!
